Theater Review: Phil Coulter in ‘The Songs I Love So Well’
A professional air and caring touch
By Judd Hollander

Phil Coulter at the piano. (Carol Rosegg)

NEW YORK—The holidays are welcomed in joyful fashion with The Songs I Love So Well, offering a funny, tender, and at times, breathtaking performance by Phil Coulter at the Irish Repertory Theatre.

An Irish artist, Coulter has an international reputation as a songwriter, composer, arranger, music producer, recording artist, and storyteller. He looks back on some of his favorite, most memorable, and seasonally appropriate tunes for this engagement, performing them all on a grand piano with a professional air and caring touch.

"Coulter … has a husky vocal tone aged by time and experience".

Offering a mixture of instrumental and vocal selections, Coulter makes for a genial host, noting how after he’s played such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, he’s finally made it to the Irish Rep.

And after working in those much larger spaces, he’s clearly enjoying appearing at a more intimate one. The songs and sounds are so perfectly balanced, it feels as if one is attending a private concert with Coulter performing directly for each member of the audience.

The evening starts off with Coulter’s rendition of the classic Irish song “Danny Boy,” the music hanging quietly in the air; it is followed by the soulful “Lament for the Wild Geese” and the touching “The Old Man,” all interspersed with some enjoyable verbal banter.

Other highlights include the gentle “In The Bleak Midwinter,” Coulter’s favorite Christmas carol; the rousing “Ireland’s Call,” which he composed for the rugby team of Ireland; the haunting folk ballad “Scorn Not His Simplicity,” a song he wrote after his son was born; and the rather jaunty “Coultergeist.”

Coulter tells an amusing story regarding “Coultergeist’s” creation. It is one of many tales and anecdotes he works into the show, all expressed with the ease of one used to making speeches sound conversational. These stories often told appear completely fresh and new.

Coulter doesn’t have a classic pop voice per se, rather he has a husky vocal tone aged by time and experience and thus is able to project nuances and feelings into every word he sings or speaks.

In regard to the latter, Coulter also proves his worth with several spellbinding poetry narrations, including his haunting and image-filled delivery of “The Man From God Knows Where.”

In an interesting coincidence, Coulter, who grew up in the town of Derry in Northern Ireland and is quite familiar with the troubles between the Catholics and Protestants and British and Irish, is performing this show on the set of “The Freedom of The City.”

The most recent production at the Irish Rep., “The Freedom of The City,” which will return after a December hiatus, tells a fictional story based on actual events. The story follows three Irish citizens caught up in a situation beyond their control after taking part in a peaceful protest disrupted by the British.

This background provides a rather appropriate setting for Coulter’s recollections from that era, many of which are crystallized with the nostalgic and bittersweet song “The Town I Loved So Well,” showing just what happens to a picturesque locale when touched by war.

Mostly a solo performance, Coulter is joined in the middle of Act 2 by Geraldine Branagan, his wife and a musical star in her own right. Branagan delivers a wonderful rendition of “The Water is Wide” and also joins her husband for several other numbers.
Coulter, who knows the classic trick of always leaving his audience wanting more, winds things up with a very enjoyable piano medley saluting the 1960s and then presents a rollicking rendition of the 1920s tune “Coney Island Washboard,” sung in the style of Jimmy Durante.

The set by Charlie Corcoran, basically consisting of the piano and some Christmas decorations, in addition to the set mentioned above, works fine. The use of a projection screen to allow the audience to see Coulter’s hands moving in time to some of the pieces he performs is a nice touch.

Sound design by Zachary Williamson augments Coulter’s music.
A virtual master on the ivories, Coulter presents heartwarming entertainment for lovers of good music, all things Irish, classical piano, and the Christmas season.

Awww Phil..
Say it ain't so... I am forever your fan for introducing your music to me through Celtic Thunder.
I don't pretend to know exactly what happened, but I do know it must have been big for you & CT to part company & probably had absolutely NOTHING to do with the lads.
I look forward to seeing what you do in the future & will be a continued follower of you & your music.

Forever in my musical heart,

Laury Leeds

Somebody once told me, " You're in showbusiness. If you want loyalty buy yourself a dog !"
There's a lot of truth in that, so it's been great being back in the studio working with my loyal lieutenants,Dave Cooke,Brendan Monaghan,Michael Keeney, Conor McCreanor ...........all of whom were such an integral part of the music of Celtic Thunder.
They were all involved with the recording of HEARTLAND ,of course, and like myself are excited ,awaiting its release and the reaction of fans. They even approve of the YouTube video and are impressed that it's had nearly 1,500 views already ,before the album is released. Roll on Sept 27th.

It's hard to imagine exactly what is going on at Celtic Thunder...but your leaving tells me that whatever it is, I'm probably not going to like it. Without you and Dave Cooke...not good. Thank you for the fabulous music and know that you will be sincerely missed.

Dear Mr. Coulter, I can't seem to address you as "Phil" as I admire you so much it would seem presumptious of me. I wanted to tell you what a shock it gave me when you said your son Ryan was the goalie for ETSU. Tennessee was where I was born and spent the first 19 years of my life until I married the love of my life. We lived in Athens, Greece until he was sent to Lincoln, Nebraska where we spent over five years. This has been my home for over 40 years but my heart belongs to TN. I would like to tell you once again how much I admire and appreciate your musical talent and your lovely personality. Your blogs are so appreciated as well. God bless you and your endeavors.Someday wish I could travel to Ireland but I'm getting a little long in the tooth to be traveling alone (two years older than you LOL.)

Mr. Coulter, I am so sad that you have left Celtic Thunder. Whenever I hear Celtic Thunder I think Phil Coulter. You are amazing. Always looking so happy and peppy. I know you wrote a lot of the songs and that adds a lot to their popularity. The first time I heard Gold and Silver days I had tears running down my face. You will be missed so much. You were just as popular as Ryan, George and the rest of the guys. I wish you much success and happiness. You are most deserving. Thanks you for all the wonderful memories.

I am such a fan! Just amazed at the changes in CT. I'm happy that a few originals remain. Can't imagine CT without you. I fear my favorite music will drift into a different path and lose the beginning allure. The boys were great on QVC the other day. Neil and Emmett are fantastic additions! Wish you well in the future! You'll be missed!

Phil, I became a "Coulter Fan" when I first heard you play "The Derry Air". Since then, I have collected most of your CD's, all your DVD's and thoroughly enjoy them all. For me, what sets your music apart is that special feeling it creates; can't describe it, just feel it. My wife sheds a tear each time you sing "The Old Man". Take care.

While I am sorry to hear that you are leaving CT, I look forward to hearing new stuff from you in the future. Good luck with you future endeavors. We have really enjoyed the original compositions that you wrote for the lads.

Hi Phil, so you live in County Wicklow? Same as Neil Byrne. Is that how you met & started working together? Will Keith & Neil still be on the Tranquility Cruise, and will someone take Damian's place now that he's on Glee? Sorry for all the questions, have a great day. Looking forward to your new "discovery" :)
Phil COULTER 04/09/2011 06:05 pm
Going to finish a little earlier in studio this evening so I can drive back down home to County Wicklow. Have to be there in time to go on-line and check out the College soccer game between East Tennessee State and Marshall College W.Virginia. My son Ryan is the goalkeeper for ETSU........and you can't get much further away from playing the piano than that !!
Doing some writing in my study early in the week then back up here Wed evening for the next bunch of recording sessions.
In answer to the lady's queries about Spain, our little place is right down in the South, near Estepona. Unfortunately with one drama and another I haven't been able to get down there to chill for a couple of years now......I guess that,as they say,is showbusiness.

Phil: It is such a pleasure to be able to communicate with such a talented human being. Unfortunately I have not seen or heard all of Storm, as PBS in Dallas does not have it scheduled. I am waiting for the DVD to come out. As far as Entertainment and Do Wacka Doo, and many others and all the all the DVD's I keep playing them and thoroughly enjoying it every time. Looking forward to your new music.
What do you think of Paul performing on 9/11?? We are so very proud of him and love him also dearly. So glad Ryan is back, and Damian seems to be having a time of his life in LA.
