Theater Review: Phil Coulter in ‘The Songs I Love So Well’
A professional air and caring touch
By Judd Hollander

NEW YORK—The holidays are welcomed in joyful fashion with The Songs I Love So Well, offering a funny, tender, and at times, breathtaking performance by Phil Coulter at the Irish Repertory Theatre.

An Irish artist, Coulter has an international reputation as a songwriter, composer, arranger, music producer, recording artist, and storyteller. He looks back on some of his favorite, most memorable, and seasonally appropriate tunes for this engagement, performing them all on a grand piano with a professional air and caring touch.

"Coulter … has a husky vocal tone aged by time and experience".

Offering a mixture of instrumental and vocal selections, Coulter makes for a genial host, noting how after he’s played such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, he’s finally made it to the Irish Rep.

And after working in those much larger spaces, he’s clearly enjoying appearing at a more intimate one. The songs and sounds are so perfectly balanced, it feels as if one is attending a private concert with Coulter performing directly for each member of the audience.

The evening starts off with Coulter’s rendition of the classic Irish song “Danny Boy,” the music hanging quietly in the air; it is followed by the soulful “Lament for the Wild Geese” and the touching “The Old Man,” all interspersed with some enjoyable verbal banter.

Other highlights include the gentle “In The Bleak Midwinter,” Coulter’s favorite Christmas carol; the rousing “Ireland’s Call,” which he composed for the rugby team of Ireland; the haunting folk ballad “Scorn Not His Simplicity,” a song he wrote after his son was born; and the rather jaunty “Coultergeist.”

Coulter tells an amusing story regarding “Coultergeist’s” creation. It is one of many tales and anecdotes he works into the show, all expressed with the ease of one used to making speeches sound conversational. These stories often told appear completely fresh and new.

Coulter doesn’t have a classic pop voice per se, rather he has a husky vocal tone aged by time and experience and thus is able to project nuances and feelings into every word he sings or speaks.

In regard to the latter, Coulter also proves his worth with several spellbinding poetry narrations, including his haunting and image-filled delivery of “The Man From God Knows Where.”

In an interesting coincidence, Coulter, who grew up in the town of Derry in Northern Ireland and is quite familiar with the troubles between the Catholics and Protestants and British and Irish, is performing this show on the set of “The Freedom of The City.”

The most recent production at the Irish Rep., “The Freedom of The City,” which will return after a December hiatus, tells a fictional story based on actual events. The story follows three Irish citizens caught up in a situation beyond their control after taking part in a peaceful protest disrupted by the British.

This background provides a rather appropriate setting for Coulter’s recollections from that era, many of which are crystallized with the nostalgic and bittersweet song “The Town I Loved So Well,” showing just what happens to a picturesque locale when touched by war.

Mostly a solo performance, Coulter is joined in the middle of Act 2 by Geraldine Branagan, his wife and a musical star in her own right. Branagan delivers a wonderful rendition of “The Water is Wide” and also joins her husband for several other numbers.
Coulter, who knows the classic trick of always leaving his audience wanting more, winds things up with a very enjoyable piano medley saluting the 1960s and then presents a rollicking rendition of the 1920s tune “Coney Island Washboard,” sung in the style of Jimmy Durante.

The set by Charlie Corcoran, basically consisting of the piano and some Christmas decorations, in addition to the set mentioned above, works fine. The use of a projection screen to allow the audience to see Coulter’s hands moving in time to some of the pieces he performs is a nice touch.

Sound design by Zachary Williamson augments Coulter’s music.
A virtual master on the ivories, Coulter presents heartwarming entertainment for lovers of good music, all things Irish, classical piano, and the Christmas season.

While I read I like to listen to music. Foolish me thought Heartland would be perfect for that activity. As you might expect, I found myself staring off into space and singing along with the CD. Be very glad you were not here to hear my rendition. LOL Thank you for so many happy hours of listening pleasure.
The future appears bright for you; bright for those of us who love your music also.

I haven't had a chance to get here and add my accolades regarding "Storm". My daughters and I are loving it! I've always had a hard time picking a "favorite" in such situations (For Celtic Thunder, my favorite has always been "Whoever is singing at the time"), but I have to admit "Shadow Dancing" provides great enjoyment. I loved "Coultergeist" the very first time I heard it, and the vocals provide a different dimension that I love.

I'm still waiting (somewhat patiently) for my copy of "Heartland". But I know I won't be disappointed.

Congratulations to Ryan!

Phil, Once again you have brought another chapter of wonderful music into my life. I LOVE Storm and HEARTLAND, its tought to decide which to listen to sometimes. I'm looking forward to the new songs of yours on Paul's album, as well as his live show. I can't name a favorite, but there is always a song of yours to suit my mood. Look forward to seeing you again on the Cruise, and the new music talent as well. Take Care and Congrats to Ryan on being Team Captain and Player of the Week!

Wow- looks like there have been a lot of things to celebrate in the Coulter household! Having 3 CDs that have PHIL Coulter songs on them make the charts- let alone spots 1,2,and 3- is unheard of--remarkable! Though not a total surprise to us.
I had to go into work today to catch up- with no phones ringing- and your CDs were just the thing to keep me grounded, focused and HAPPY. And after 6 hours of work, drove home with George singing Top Banana-
Your music is for all of my moods- and that in itself is amazing for 1 artist to accomplish!
Take good care- ( and I am also raising a glass of wine)
Meg

Just received Heartland in mail today - enjoying it immensely. Without the vocals, you have built upon the score until it fills your mind and soul - WONDERFUL!!
Storm dvd blew me away. Find thee a playwrite and an angel; flesh out the story and you would have a brilliant stage musical on your hands!! How one composer can create in such a diverse genre is beyond me: love songs, ballads, young, old, today and yesterday themes, lively, sultry, and exotic rhythms course throughout. Each one is better than the last.
Will miss the cruise 2012 but will be with you in spirit. Best of Luck!

Listening to "Heartland" for the 5th time this morning and it's only 7:55! What a wonderful talent you possess and we are fortnuate enough that you share with the world. There is a "connect" with each piece; all special in their own right but put together become almost overwhelming. Thank you, Phil, for all your efforts. Those of us lucky enough to have discovered you at sometime in their lives are truly the winners.

Phil, I just received my copies of the Heartland cd..all the way from Ireland. Listening right now. It is, of course, absolutely wonderful. I've loved your music for a long time, and anyone will appreciate this album...however as a fan of Celtic Thunder - this is a treat. So many memories for me. I really enjoyed and appreciated the liner notes, thank you so much.

I have to confess that there are times that I really do miss being involved with Celtic Thunder, the lads, the music and the great adventure...... but not the other stuff. It irks that my departure was abrupt and less than cordial, but life goes on and I've taken great strength from all the messages of support I've been receiving.I love the fact that folks are taking the time and trouble to make contact, from Celtic Thunder fans to diehard Phil Coulter fans to old friends from my University days. Bless you all.
I'm proud of CELTIC THUNDER, I'm proud of STORM and I'm equally proud of HEARTLAND but the most important thing is that connection with you,the listeners. I cannot create in a vacuum and that is why your feedback is so important and so empowering.
It's kind of nice that on this, the release day, the HEARTLAND video has passed 9,000 views on YouTube.
More good news to-day was that my goalkeeper son,Ryan, in East Tennessee State, has just been nominated"Defensive Player of the Week," by the Southern Conference.Go Bucs!

Mr. Coulter,
Warm greetings from Indiana, USA. I received Heartland (pre-ordered!) this morning and promptly called my 76-year-old mother who is from Germany to come have some tea with me and listen to you. Several pots and replays later we still sit in awe. The selection is just grand! God has so blessed you and us, the world, with your extraordinary talent. How can one person have so much depth, insight and creativity? You "paint" with such eloquence. Where does it come from? Your music stirs the soul and moves me in such indescribable ways...every sense and emotion are touched. You really are a musical genius. Yes, there's Bach & Mozart, but to think there's Coulter in MY LIFETIME!!! I own all your music and especially love Lake Shadows and Winter's Crossing. I can't wait to hear what you do next as I know everything you touch is beyond special. Thank you (which seems so inadequate) for sharing yourself with us and for making the world a better place with your art. I wish you continued success, happiness, good health, and inspiration. Kindest regards, Natalie
